Ice falling from 1 World Trade Center closes NYC's West Side Highway

NEW YORK, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Falling ice from New York City's 1 World Trade Center closed the city's West Side Highway and several streets and sidewalks Wednesday, police said.

Traffic was stopped on surrounding streets during Wednesday's morning commute because authorities feared wind-blown ice falling from the city's tallest building could strike traffic and pedestrians, the New York Post reported.

Streets around 1 World Trade Center have been closed several times this winter by sheets of ice sheared from the upper stories of the 1,776-foot-tall building.

"The snow starts to melt and the liquid drips off and makes bigger and bigger icicles, or chunks of ice that beak off skyscrapers," Joey Picca, a National Weather Service meteorologist in New York City, said.
