ELGIN, Ill., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The city of Elgin, Ill., has ended a 10-month legal fight with an anti-abortion group, allowing Life Center Inc. to provide ultrasounds in a mobile van.
The settlement announced Thursday allow non-profit organizations to operate out of vehicles, the Chicago Tribune reported. Elgin agreed to change a zoning ordinance adopted in 2012 and to waive permit fees.
Elgin will also pay $280,000 to Life Center. The group says the money will be used for legal expenses.
Life Center filed a federal lawsuit in March. U.S. District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan called the ordinance "unconstitutionally vague" in August, describing it as "unduly burdensome to the right of a woman to choose life."
The group was allowed to continue using its recreational vehicle for ultrasounds during the litigation.
"I think it's a great common ground for people on both sides of the issue to recognize that women are better served when they're fully informed," said Noel Sterett, a lawyer representing Life Center.
