Florida woman mauled by bear

LONGWOOD, Fla., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has set traps in a neighborhood where a woman walking her dog was severely injured in an apparent bear attack.

As of Wednesday morning, the traps in a subdivision in the Longwood area had yielded only a cub, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Karen Parker, a spokeswoman for the FWC, said authorities do not believe the cub, which weighs 75 to 100 pounds, was involved in the mauling of Susan Chalfant in the Wingfield North subdivision.

Chalfant was severely injured Monday night, and officials said they had not yet been able to talk to her. A neighbor told a 911 dispatcher she was "moaning in tremendous pain" and police said she was unconscious by the time paramedics arrived.

The neighborhood in central Florida has become a hot spot for encounters between people and bears in recent years.
