Rep. Mike Rogers concerned about security of HealthCare.gov

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said Sunday he's concerned about the security of personal data on the HealthCare.gov website.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Sunday in a report that the Affordable Care Act enrollment website was improved by a series of hardware upgrades and software fixes.

Under the improvements, the average system response time is less than 1 second and the error rate is "consistently well below 1 percent," the report said. The online system is stable 90 percent of the time and up to 50,000 shoppers are able to use the site simultaneously for up to 800,000 visits per day.

In an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," Rogers said that even though the website may be running more smoothly, he's more concerned with privacy and security issues.

HealthCare.gov "does not meet even the minimal standards of the private sector," he said.

U.S. citizens "should not tolerate the sheer level of incompetence securing this site. And remember how much personal information is not only there, but all of the [federal government data] sites that the [HealthCare.gov] hub accesses would expose Americans' personal information in a way that is breathtakingly bad," he added.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said Republicans are trying "to sabotage the entire effort, even though they don't have an alternative."

"Yes, there are problems -- there's no denying that -- let's work to fix them. We know what it looks like when they're fixed. It looks like California, it looks like New York, its looks like Kentucky," he said.
