Town defends itself after resident dresses as Klansman on Halloween

CRAIGSVILLE, Va., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A Ku Klux Klan Halloween costume worn by a Craigsville, Va., boy is prompting questions of whether the organization is active in the area, the mayor said.

"We don't want this type of thing in our town, in any way, shape or form," said Mayor Richard Fox. "To my knowledge there is no active Ku Klux Klan in the town of Craigsville."

Fox began answering questions about the white supremacist organization after a local 7-year-old dressed as a Klan member for Halloween, in a white, hooded costume sewn by his mother, WTVR-TV, Richmond, reported.

WTVR-TV added the mother, Jessica Black, received several death threats on Facebook after posting a photo of her son there.

A Craigsville resident, Rudy Bazzera, told WHSV-TV, Harrisonburg, the Klan once existed in the area and held rallies, but he knew of no Klan activities in the area today.

"This is a good town. It has good people in it, and it doesn't deserve the attention it's getting for this," Bazzera said.

Craigsville, near the state line Virginia shares with West Virginia, is not one of the eight communities on the list of active Klan groups maintained by the Southern Poverty Law center, WHSV-TV said.
