Woman arrested for attempting to kill ex-boyfriend's son

CHEVERLY, Md., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Police in Maryland said they charged a woman with first-degree attempted murder after she allegedly tried to smother her ex-boyfriend's son in bed.

The boy, 8-year-old Jacob Soliz-Amaya, told police he was sleeping at his Cheverly, Md., home Saturday when a woman he identified as Helen Newsome, came out from a hiding place in the home and put a pillow over his face.

"As Jacob starts to fight, he is hit in the head by a dumbbell," Prince George's County Police Capt. Jimmy Simms told ABCNews.com. "He had the mindset to fight for his life and run for help."

Jacob's father, Andy Amaya, wasn't at home at the time of the attack, but another adult was staying with the boy, ABCNews.com reported.

Police arrested Newsome later that morning and she was being held on $500,000 bond. Police said she admitted her involvement in the assault.
