Hasan taken to Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Convicted Fort Hood, Texas, mass killer Nidal Hasan has been transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he will sit on the military's only death row.

Once he arrives, Hasan, a psychiatrist who held the rank of major when he went on a shooting spree in November 2009 that left 13 people dead and more than 30 injured, will likely be forced to shave the thick beard he grew in violation of Army rules on a soldier's appearance. If he doesn't shave voluntarily, the beard will be removed by force, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman Kimberly Lewis said all soldiers at the military's only maximum-security prison are treated as soldiers and forced to abide by military codes for appearance and conduct.

Fort Leavenworth holds 470 inmates, all serving sentences of 10 years or more for crimes convicted while in the military -- including five soldiers on death row. Hasan now makes six.

Despite having been convicted of a crime, "all inmates are considered soldiers and are treated as such," and must abide by Army regulations unless granted an exception, Lewis said.
