U.N. expresses concern for refugees fleeing Congo violence to Uganda

UNITED NATIONS, July 23 (UPI) -- The United Nations Tuesday expressed concern for refugees displaced by fighting in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a statement, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said refugees from the conflict between government and rebel troops have been entering adjacent Uganda, and the Bubukwanga transit center, 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the Congolese border, is now home to more than 15,000 refugees.

"Many refugees brought their animals with them from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and are sleeping in their tents with their ducks and goats, increasing the risk of disease in the transit center," U.N. spokesman Adrian Edwards said.

The statement added the fighting has continued in the North Kivu province capital of Goma, near the border with Uganda, with no sign of ending.
