Poll suggests public not interested in Sarah Palin for Senate

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- About one-third of Americans are enthusiastic about conservative commentator Sarah Palin running for the U.S. Senate, a new poll said.

The former Alaska governor said recently she was considering getting back into politics; however the HuffPost/YouGov poll released this weekend said that on a nationwide basis, there was not a lot of enthusiasm for the idea.

The poll, which was not limited to Alaskans, found 49 percent of U.S. voters opposed Palin holding public office. Only 35 percent thought it was a good idea and 15 percent were undecided.

Palin, who enjoys a high-profile among conservatives, did better when respondents were grouped along party lines with 72 percent of Republicans in favor of her return to public office and 72 percent of Democrats opposed.

The Huffington Post said a Public Policy Polling survey in February indicated incumbent Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, would be able to hold off a challenge from the Republican Palin.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll was conducted July 10-11 among 1,000 adults using a sample selected from YouGov's opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. The margin of error was not revealed.
