Clinic owner guilty in hepatitis C outbreak

LAS VEGAS, July 2 (UPI) -- Las Vegas medical clinic owner Dipak Desai was found guilty of second-degree murder in a hepatitis C outbreak at his facility.

The ruling also found him guilty of criminal neglect, criminal neglect with substantial bodily harm on several patients and insurance fraud, KTNV-TV, Las Vegas, reported Monday.

Desai was accused of reusing syringes and vials in endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures. Seven patients contracted hepatitis C in 2007.

He was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Rodolfo Meana, 77, who died in April 2012 from complications believed to stem from the hepatitis C he contracted at the clinic.

Ronald Lakeman, a former employee of Desai's, was also found guilty on several charges of criminal neglect with substantial bodily harm and insurance fraud, KTNV said.
