Recording said small plane was overweight before crash killed four

WATERFORD, Mich., June 24 (UPI) -- A recording made in a small plane that crashed after takeoff from Waterford, Mich., killing all four aboard, indicated a weight problem in the plane.

The four-seat Cessna 172 crashed and burned immediately after takeoff Friday, killing its pilot, Troy Brothers, 19, who had recently received his pilot's license; his mother, Sandra Haley, 53; his step-father, James Haley, 58; and brother-in-law Jamie Jose, 34, all Michigan residents.

The news website Mlive.com said Monday the final conversation between Brothers and air traffic control included Brothers' comment, "We're a little overweight. We're going to have to come back and land."

"You can bring her back," a controller says on a recording of the conversation, available at www.liveatc.net, "or on the grass is fine."
