Plane crashes into Virginia apartment, 2 hospitalized

HERNDON, Va., May 31 (UPI) -- Two people were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries after a small plane crashed into an apartment in Herndon, Va., officials said.

The pilot William Larson, 61, and a passenger, Tache L. Alejandro, 39, were shooting infrared photographs for an aerial photography company just before midnight Thursday when their single-engine Cessna, already low on fuel, experienced electrical problems and its engine started to cut out, The Washington Post reported.

The plane crashed into the living room of an apartment where David Ventura, his family and roommates live -- leaving a large hole in the ceiling and broken glass and other debris on the floor, along with the plane's nose, the newspaper said.

Larson and a 33-year-old woman who lived in the apartment were hospitalized.

Ventura said the crash sounded like an explosion

When he went to the living room and saw the wreckage, he said the pilot "asked if we were OK. I told him that we were all good."

Ventura said his 6-year-old son, Markus, slept through the crash.

The family got out of the building quickly, concerned about the possibility of an explosion or fire. Police went door-to-door ordering an evacuation.
