Teen to face juvenile charges for hot sauce prank

CHICAGO, June 6 (UPI) -- A Chicago teenager who allegedly pulled a prank involving hot sauce resulting in three people being hospitalized will be charged as a juvenile, officials said.

The 17-year-old Highland Park High School student is accused of spiking a container of marinara sauce in his school cafeteria with Da Bomb brand hot sauce May 14, causing three cafeteria employees to become ill, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Although they did not ingest the sauce, the cafeteria workers had to be hospitalized after experiencing coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and skin rashes, Township School District 113 spokeswoman Natalie Kaplan said.

Two students felt the effects of the sauce, but were not hospitalized.

"It was just being near it," Kaplan said.

The teenager, whose name was not reported, is expected to appear in juvenile court this week on five counts of misdemeanor battery.
