Suspect in kidnapping of two girls had long criminal history

DES MOINES, Iowa, May 23 (UPI) -- An Iowa man suspected of kidnapping two girls this week had a long history of sexual assaults dating back to when he was 15, court records indicate.

One of the girls believed abducted by Michael James Klunder is still missing, The Des Moines Register reported Thursday.

Klunder, 42, was found dead of an apparent suicide in an area northeast of Dayton, Iowa, several hours after the abductions Monday.

A registered sex offender, Klunder had been convicted and served prison time for a series of rapes, assaults, kidnappings and attempted robberies on victims as young as 3 years old.

He had been sentenced to 41 years in prison in 1992 for two kidnappings in two days. In one case, police said Klunder abducted a 21-year-old woman, assaulted her and then forcibly took her from the area.

The next day, police said, he kidnapped two 3-year-old girls and abandoned them alive in a trash bin 50 miles away. One of the toddlers appeared to have been choked but neither had been sexually assaulted.

Klunder was released from prison in 2011 after a state review board said he had completed a sex offender treatment program and they found no evidence he was dangerous.
