GRANBY, Mass., May 23 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old Massachusetts girl is recovering after being struck by lightning, officials said.

The girl was found unresponsive at a wooden picnic table outside the MacDuffie School in Granby about 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the Northampton Daily Hampshire Gazette reported.

Steve Griffin, the head of the school, said Wednesday the girl is recovering at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield.

"She is alert and asking about her homework, which is wonderful," Griffin said.

Two other students -- a 20-year-old and a 17-year old -- were also hospitalized after the lightning strike, Griffin said. The 20-year-old was knocked unconscious and the 17-year-old reported feeling the effects from the lightning, but was further away when the lightning stuck and was not directly hit. Both have since been released from the hospital.

Griffin said a number of students were outside watching a lacrosse match Tuesday when a sudden thunderstorm hit.
