NASHVILLE, April 18 (UPI) -- A Tennessee mother says a statewide board needs to be created to review curriculum used in the state's schools for anti-Semitic bias.
Laurie Cardoza-Moore wants Williamson County school board members to remove a textbook used in Advanced Placement classes she says weaves anti-Semitic attitudes into information students receive, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Thursday.
She points to a specific passage in a social studies textbook:
"If a Palestinian suicide bomber kills several dozen Israeli teenagers in a Jerusalem restaurant, is that an act of terrorism or wartime retaliation against Israeli government policies and army actions?"
Cardoza-Moore, who heads the pro-Israel group Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, said the passage is an example of anti-Semitism that aims to delegitimize the Jewish right to the land.
Assistant county school superintendent Tim Gaddis disputes the text demonstrates bias. He says the college-level book demonstrates competing arguments and does not take a position.
Cardoza-Moore said she wants to meet with the county school director and hopes to lobby the legislature to establish a board that review textbooks for bias or discrimination.
