RIVERHEAD, N.Y., March 22 (UPI) -- Authorities seized more than 350 handguns and rifles from a Centereach, N.Y., man's illegal home gunsmithing business.
"We see weapons all over the place," Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said at a news conference Thursday, addressing the arrest of Jay Steiner, 66. "More than 85 illegal handguns and 250 rifles, shotguns and what you will see is a machine gun.
"This fellow had more firepower than the detectives, when they went to search the house."
Steiner allegedly ran the business with 300 feet of Centereach High School, CBS News noted.
He was arrested in January on criminal weapons possessions charges and prosecutors announced the case Thursday after crime lab investigators completed testing on the illegal weapons found in the house, the Long Island Press reported Friday.
"Most of the guns recovered from this defendant's home were not under lock and key," Spota said. "We found them scattered among various rooms in the house and in an unlocked attic."
He added investigators found two devices called "drop-in auto sears," small pieces of metal used to convert AR-15 assault rifles into fully automatic machine guns.
