When officers arrived at the home, Cuellar's family members tried to restrain him, Jacinto City Police Chief Joe Ayala said.

"As soon as officers arrived, they held him down because he wanted to leave out the back door as the officers walked in," Ayala said. "As officers walked in, he reached for his waistband and pulled out his pistol and started firing."

Police said Lt. Dennis Walker was shot in the chest and Sgt. Jennifer Simpson-Castenada was shot in the arm. Both are expected to recover.

Cuellar allegedly barricaded himself in a bathroom for several hours after the shooting.

Eventually, SWAT team members and Cuellar exchanged gunfire. Cuellar was shot in the leg and then taken into custody.

Police described Cuellar's injuries as non-life-threatening.
