Woman: Grandson's killing was self-defense

PONTIAC, Mich., March 5 (UPI) -- A jury was selected Monday for the trial of an elderly Michigan woman who says she was defending herself when she killed her 17-year-old grandson.

Sandra Layne, 75, of West Bloomfield is on trial in Oakland County Circuit Court on a charge of open murder, the Detroit Free Press reported. Lawyers were scheduled to give their opening statements Tuesday.

Jonathan Hoffman was shot five times in May in Layne's condominium. The recording of a 911 call played at an earlier hearing showed he called the emergency line after he was shot and was shot again while he was on the line.

The teenager had been living with Layne and her husband after his parents' divorce. Jerome Sabbota, Layne's attorney, said his behavior had become increasingly bad and his grandmother, who is expected to testify, was afraid of him.

"The defense is self-defense," Sabbota said.

Attorneys say the trial will take about two weeks.
