PLANO, Texas, March 4 (UPI) -- Psychologists said a Texas man fanatically opposed to the federal government is mentally fit to stand trial on charges he tried blowing up a gas line.
Police said Anson Chi, 34, of Plano, outside Dallas, was tampering with an above ground gas line in his neighborhood when a homemade bomb he was carrying exploded in June, critically injuring him.
An online interview with an anti-government website revealed Chi held deep reservations about the power of the federal government and that he wanted to "slay the head off" the "dragon" he called the IRS, Federal Reserve and the nation's banks, The Dallas Morning News said Monday.
Chi listed himself as a volunteer coordinator for Libertarian Ron Paul's 2008 presidential campaign.
Chi is charged with possession of a firearm (in this case an explosive) that's not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, malicious use of explosive materials and using or carrying a destructive device during a crime of violence. If convicted he could face 30 years in prison.
