Gynecologist found guilty of rape

CHICAGO, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A Chicago jury convicted a gynecologist of raping a woman during a 2002 pelvic exam.

Bruce Sylvester Smith was convicted of two counts of criminal sexual assault Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Smith, 60, did not react to the verdict when it was announced after an hour of deliberation.

The Tribune said Smith, whose license to practice medicine was suspended several years ago and has been incarcerated since his arrest nearly three years ago, faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in February.

Cook County prosecutors didn't charge Smith of any crimes until May 2010, a month after the Tribune wrote about him as part of a series on doctors' wrongdoings.

Smith allegedly assaulted the woman, who was eight months pregnant, during a pelvic exam, the newspaper reported.

At least seven patients accused him of sexual misconduct. Other allegations included an alleged attempt to solicit an affair and talking to patients about sex toys, state records show.
