AA jetliner diverted when pilot took ill

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- An American Airline jetliner headed to Dallas from Chicago made an emergency landing in St. Louis after one of the pilots became ill, the airline said.

American spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said the MD-80 was carrying 140 passengers and five crew members when it landed safely at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Fagan said the pilot suffered either chest or abdominal pains and was taken to a St. Louis-area hospital by paramedics.

The Chicago Tribune reported it was the co-pilot who became ill.

The plane took off from Chicago at 9:53 a.m., landed in St. Louis at 10:50 a.m. and made it to Dallas at 1:37 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
