Elementary principal facing drug charges

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A California elementary school principal is facing drug charges after police found methamphetamine at his San Francisco home, officials said.

Eric Dean Lewis, 42, principal of Montague Elementary in Santa Clara, was arrested Friday on suspicion of having methamphetamine for sale and offering to furnish narcotics, the Bay Area Newsgroup reported.

Police began investigating Lewis after receiving a tip that he was involved in drugs, said California Department of Justice spokeswoman Michelle Gregory.

An undercover officer began chatting with Lewis on an gay dating Web site, the report said.. Lewis allegedly offered the officer an unspecified type of narcotics and the officer agreed to go to Lewis' home for a date, Gregory said.

Lewis was arrested at a Caltrain station in San Francisco.

After he was arrested, authorities searched his home and found a quarter-ounce of methamphetamine, drug scales and an undetermined amount of GHB, police said. Investigators say they also found a number of unidentified pills that are being examined. Police also seized Lewis' computer.

Santa Clara Unified School District officials said they are shocked at the arrest

"The community felt he was well-regarded," said Superintendent Dr. Bobbie Plough. "It's very much a shock."
