Teen in cancer scam pleads guilty

EL PASO, Texas, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- A Texas teenager who lied about having cancer pleaded guilty to charges for taking donations as part of a scam.

Angie Gomez, 19, of Horizon City, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of property over $1,500 and under $20,000, the El Paso (Texas) Times reported.

She was given a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended during five years of probation. Gomez was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and nearly $16,500 in restitution to the people who donated money to her Achieve the Dream Foundation, and perform 400 hours of community service.

Last year, the El Paso Times reported Gomez was diagnosed with leukemia and only had a short time to live. Gomez set up a foundation to help children with leukemia and donations were made.

Horizon City police later received a tip that Gomez had lied about being sick and an investigation proved Gomez's claims to be false.

After the hearing, Gomez's lawyer, Sheldon Myers, said his client was "very remorseful" and didn't personally spend the money she raised for her foundation.
