CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Joe Biden was approved by acclamation as the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee Thursday during the party's national convention in Charlotte, N.C.

"It is my great honor to place into nomination for the office of vice president of the United States, my father, my hero, Joe Biden," said Beau Biden, Delaware Attorney General.

"He has been there for us," the son said. "In moments both public and private, he's the father I've always known ... and the vice president our nation needs."

Tears welled in the elder Biden's eyes and he turned away to wipe them away.

"We do have promises to keep," the younger Biden said. "And my dad and Barack Obama are keeping them. Yes we have miles to go before we sleep, but Barack Obama and Joe Biden are leading the way forth."
