Ryan: Obama undermines Clinton reforms

ADEL, Iowa, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan blasted President Obama Wednesday, saying he had undermined Clinton-era bipartisanship.

"We're going to hear from President Clinton tonight in Charlotte (N.C., at the Democratic convention)," Ryan told a crowd in Iowa. "My guess is we're going to get a great rendition of how great things were in the 1990s, but not hear a lot about how great things are today."

Ryan said Obama rolled back welfare reforms enacted under President Clinton -- something Clinton and Democrats vehemently say is not true. The allegation is based on a presidential waiver allowing states more flexibility in managing welfare, but the waivers could only be granted to programs that sent more recipients back to work, The Hill reported.

Ryan also accused Obama of starting "a gusher of new spending and only demagoguery for those of us who have proposed solutions." He said his proposal to turn Medicare to a subsidized private-insurance model was "an idea that came out of the Clinton Commission to save Medicare," The Hill reported.
