Iraqi pleads guilty in Ky. terrorism case

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- An Iraqi national pleaded guilty to attempting to ship weapons and money to the terror group al-Qaida in Iraq, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 24, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Louisville, Ky., to charges of attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida in Iraq, conspiracy to transfer, possess and export Stinger missiles, and making false statements to immigration officials, the Justice Department said in a release.

Hammadi co-defendant Waad Ramadan Alwan pleaded guilty to all counts of a 23-count indictment Dec. 16. Alwan was charged with conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals abroad, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. nationals abroad, distributing information on how to build and use improvised explosive devices, attempting to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiracy to transfer, possess and export Stinger missiles.

Hammadi will be sentenced Dec. 5.
