Pastor convicted in kidnapping case

BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A federal jury in Vermont has found an Amish-Mennonite pastor guilty of abetting an international kidnapping in a case involving a same-sex union.

The jury convicted Kenneth L. Miller of helping Lisa A. Miller flee the country with her daughter in 2009 to evade court-ordered visits with Miller's former partner in a Vermont civil union, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Miller, 46, of Stuarts Draft, Va., could face a possible three years in prison.

Lisa A. Miller, who is no relation to the pastor, moved to Virginia in 2003, declared herself a born-against Christian and tried to strip her same-sex partner Janet Jenkins of parental rights in court. She also interfered with mandated parental visits.

Miller fled to Nicaragua with her daughter after a Vermont judge threatened to transfer custody of the girl to Jenkins.

Prosecutors presented evidence the pastor helped Lisa Miller because he believed in her cause.

Miller and her daughter, now 10, are still missing.
