Man charged with trying to grab girl

PHILADELPHIA, July 20 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia man has been charged with the attempted daylight abduction of a young girl on a street near her home, police said Friday.

Carlos Figueroa-Fagot, 33, was arrested Friday morning at his home, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. Capt. John Darby of the Special Victims Unit said he walked into a police station late Thursday and was allowed to go home for the rest of the night.

Much of the attempted kidnapping Tuesday was captured by security cameras that showed a white car following the 10-year-old girl and her brother and then a man getting out and attempting to get the girl into the car, CNN reported. The man retreated and drove off when the girl struggled and the boy screamed.

The footage was shown over and over on local television newscasts.

Darby said Figueroa-Fagot told police he was "forced" to surrender after consulting family members and a former pastor. The suspect "felt that he could not walk, talk or breathe out on the streets," Darby said.
