Neighbor held in Utah child kidnapping

WEST JORDAN, Utah, July 11 (UPI) -- A Utah man was in jail Wednesday for the alleged kidnapping and killing of a 6-year-old girl whose family lived nearby, prosecutors said.

Terry Lee Black, 41, West Jordan, was arrested Tuesday in the slaying last month of Sierra Newbold, whose abduction may have been captured on surveillance video.

Salt Lake County prosecutors said they were led to Black by video from the Newbolds' home surveillance system, which captured the image of a man they believe was Black carrying something out of the home in the wee hours of June 26.

Sierra's body was found later that day in a nearby canal that runs through a field that had been scorched by a recent wildfire.

The Salt Lake Tribune said police arrested Black three days later after he allegedly stole a car and then tried to rob a bank near the kidnap scene. Officers saw soot stains on his clothing consistent with the burned field and later found the girl's DNA on his body.

Investigators said Black was a casual acquaintance of the Newbold family and attended the same church. There was no indication he had ever been to the Newbold home, and the Newbolds at first did not recognize him when they were shown a photo.
