Jury selection begins for alleged slasher

FLINT, Mich., May 2 (UPI) -- A judge and lawyers in Michigan said they whittled down a list of potential jurors and plan to question them further for the trial of a suspected serial killer.

The first two days of jury selection -- Monday and Tuesday -- for the trial of Elias Abuelazam eliminated those who had formed a strong opinion or who had financial hardships or education obligations, the Flint (Mich.) Journal reported. Thursday's questioning would be more about the jurors' backgrounds.

"These will be more general questions to find out who these people are," said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.

Abuelazam, an Israeli Arab, is accused of going on a stabbing spree that killed five and injured nine, the newspaper said. This trial is only for charges in the fatal stabbing of Arnold Minor.

Three of the alleged killings took place in the Flint area, while other attacks occurred in Toledo, Ohio, and Leesburg, Va.
