WASHINGTON, April 28 (UPI) -- Intelligence analysts say al-Qaida's central organization in Pakistan has been hollowed out by the loss of much of its leadership.
Robert Grenier, former head of the CIA Counterterrorism Center, described al-Qaida as "marginalized" since the assassination of Osama bin Laden, CNN said.
A senior U.S. official told CNN that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian doctor who was bin Laden's second-in-command and now runs the organization, lacks the founder's "charisma."
Peter Bergen, a CNN national security analyst and author of "Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad," said Zawahiri "inherited a bit of a lemon."
"Their record of failure speaks for itself: No success in the west since the London attacks of 2005, no attacks in the United States since 9/11, almost the entire top leadership dead or captured," Bergen said.
