CRAMERTON, N.C., April 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich hinted Wednesday that he'll soon drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

The Georgian told CNN his team is "working out the details of our transition" from candidate to "citizen."

Gingrich said he is committed to defeating President Obama and will find ways to try to be helpful to the Republican Party and its presumptive presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

The former speaker plans to formally leave the race next Tuesday, senior campaign aides told Fox News.

The aides said Gingrich will "more than likely" endorse the former Massachusetts governor at that time.
