Caregiver stole from Pearl Harbor survivor

EL CAJON, Calif., April 13 (UPI) -- A San Diego-area caregiver was sentenced to two years in jail for stealing $7,000 from a 93-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor and leaving him a filthy home.

Milagros Angeles, 63, had written checks on accounts of Arnold Bauer and sent the money to family members in the Philippines, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Bauer was found dazed and in bad shape by authorities at his El Cajon home in January 2011.

The Times said he was clutching a photo of the repair ship Vestal, on which he was serving during the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack.

Bauer was taken to a veterans hospital and later a nursing home for veterans. He died in November.

Angeles pleaded guilty in the El Cajon branch of San Diego Superior Court to forgery and elder abuse.
