Asian population shows fastest U.S. growth

WASHINGTON, March 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Census Bureau says the nation's Asian population growth from 2000 to 2010 was greater than any other race group.

The Census Bureau report released Wednesday, "The Asian Population: 2010," said the population that identified as at least partly Asian grew 45.6 percent in the decade ending 2010, while those who identified as Asian alone grew by 43.3 percent. The overall U.S. population grew by 9.7 percent during that period.

The report said 14.7 million people identified as Asian alone in 2010, and the Asian alone-or-in-combination population grew by 30 percent or more in every U.S. state except for Hawaii. Nevada saw the highest growth at 116 percent, while Hawaii's already large Asian population (54 percent) grew by 11 percent.

The U.S. cities with the largest Asian alone-or-in-combination populations were New York (1.1 million), Los Angeles (484,000) and San Jose, Calif., (327,000). San Francisco, San Diego and urban Honolulu also posted Asian populations greater than 200,000.
