Nursing home fire blamed on meth lab

ASHTABULA, Ohio, March 6 (UPI) -- Fire officials in Ohio say a methamphetamine lab triggered a nursing home fire that killed one person and injured three others in the town of Ashtabula.

Firefighters said there was heavy smoke but little fire coming from a room on the second floor of the Parkhaven Nursing Home Sunday night, WEWS-TV, Cleveland, reported.

Ashtabula Fire Chief Ron Pristina told Cleveland's WJW-TV that once the smoke cleared, firefighters were stunned by what they saw.

"We all sort of looked at each other and went, 'You know, are we seeing what we think we're seeing?'" he said.

Pristina said investigators are still trying to determine who created the meth lab.

The Cuyahoga Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Shaun Warrens, 31, who was not a resident of the nursing home, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.

An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of his death.

A criminal investigation is underway.
