Woman gets life for stealing unborn baby

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., March 1 (UPI) -- A Kentucky woman received an automatic sentence of life with no parole Thursday for killing a pregnant woman by cutting her unborn son from her uterus.

The sentence was agreed to last month when Kathy Coy pleaded guilty but mentally ill to kidnapping and killing Jamie Stice, 21, the Bowling Green (Ky.) Daily News reported.

Both Judge John Grise and members of Stice's family had harsh words for Coy, 34, during the hearing in Warren Circuit Court. The judge said he had "never seen a crime this horrendous."

Carolyn Miracle, Stice's cousin, said that Coy must answer to another court "that will give sufficient punishment for Kathy."

Coy was arrested at a Bowling Green hospital after she was brought in by ambulance in April 2011. She claimed to be the mother of the newborn boy who still had not only the umbilical cord but his mother's uterus and ovaries still attached, and doctors quickly determined she was lying.

The baby survived the ordeal.

Coy soon told police where to find Stice's body in a wooded area. The young woman's throat had been cut and her uterus cut open.

Investigators say Coy, who had been divorced twice and has two teenage children, had a history of faking pregnancies and of stalking pregnant women.
