Man fatally shot at Mardi Gras parade

PLAQUEMINE, La., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Police said they were searching for a 25-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting another man at a Mardi Gras parade in Louisiana.

The shooting Sunday afternoon in Plaquemine, La., outside Baton Rouge, killed Dewayne Milton Smith, 27, of White Castle, La., Plaquemine police said.

Akeem O. Gailes of Plaquemine was named as the suspect, The Advocate of Baton Rouge, La., reported.

The shooting occurred at 3:15 p.m. during the Plaquemine Community Parade, police said.

A man believed to be Gailes got out of a four-door white Chevrolet Malibu and began arguing with people on the other side of the street, police said.

Gailes allegedly punched Smith's cousin in the face, police said, and Smith came forward to defend his cousin.

Police said Gailes then pulled out a gun and shot Smith in the chest before fleeing.

Witnesses identified Gailes from a photo lineup, police said.
