WEST WARWICK, R.I., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- More than 150 people attended a memorial service to remember the 100 people killed in a Rhode Island nightclub fire nine years ago.
Survivors of the fire and loved ones of those who died Sunday read the names of those who perished in the Feb. 20, 2003, fire at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, The Providence (R.I.) Journal reported.
More than 450 people were in the club for a show by the band Great White when pyrotechnics used for the opening number ignited fireproofing foam. The band's lead guitarist died in the fire. More than 200 people were injured in the fourth most lethal fire at a U.S. nightclub.
Those attending the memorial said property owner Raymond J. Villanova has resisted talking to them about buying the land so they can build a permanent memorial, the newspaper said.
"We're just trying to get his attention," said survivor Gina Russo, 44, an officer of the non-profit Station Fire Memorial Fund.
