Prison guards fire shots to quell riot

SAN QUENTIN, Calif., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Guards at California's San Quentin State Prison broke up an exercise yard riot Thursday with warning gunshots and pepper spray, authorities said.

The melee erupted about 11:30 a.m. with between 150 and 200 inmates fighting, some with handmade weapons, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Sgt. Gabe Walters said four inmates were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and others were treated at the prison. No guards were hurt.

Walters said about three lethal rifle rounds were fired as a warning and rubber projectiles were also used to bring the riot to an end.

"Our staff was able to quell the incident," Walters told the Times.

It wasn't clear what triggered the violence.
