Durham tops U.S. city tolerance rankings

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Durham, N.C., was declared the most tolerant city in the United States in rankings released by The Daily Beast on Martin Luther King Day.

The Carolina city upstaged such liberal bastions as San Francisco, Los Angeles and even Las Vegas when data was crunched on racial diversity, prevalence of same-sex relationships and hate crimes.

Durham population was 60.4 percent white and 27.1 percent black with 8.3 same-sex households per 1,000. The number of hate crimes per 100,000 residents in 2010 was 0.4.

The survey used statistics compiled previously by UCLA, Pew Research, the FBI and the Association of Religious Data Archives, the Daily Beast said.

The top 10 cities were: 1, Durham; 2, Honolulu; 3, San Francisco; 4, Miami; 5, Baltimore; 6, Seattle; 7, Trenton, N.J.; 8, Los Angeles; 9, Ann Arbor, Mich.; 10, Austin, Texas.
