CORDOVA, Alaska, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The southern Alaska coastal town of Cordova has received about 15 feet of snow this winter, city and weather service officials say.
On the city's Web site, officials have dubbed the relentless snow season "Snowpocalypse."
"Weather Stats: Since November 1st we have received 176" of snow -- Do the math!" the site states, while providing citizen updates about the latest road, school closures -- no classes all this week -- and avalanche danger levels.
Accuweather.com said Tuesday it has snowed every day since Dec. 17 in Cordova, and more snow is on the way, along with high winds. About 70 Alaska National Guard members were dispatched to Cordova Sunday to help the community of about 2,200 people on Prince William Sound dig out.
"Travel, unless an emergency, is still discouraged as it impedes the removal of the snow," the city Web site warned Tuesday. "Please stay home if at all possible."
"Tomorrow the National Guard will continue to work on the schools and the hospital. Work will also continue on Copper River Seafoods and Orca Lodge Warehouse. Work will also begin on the business district and residential areas.
"The city crews will be maintaining only one lane on many of the side streets for emergency vehicle passage.
"Please keep children off of all snow piles, snow berms and away from heavy equipment. Visibility with all the snow piles is very limited."
People who feel their homes are unsafe because of snow on their roofs were encouraged to head to an emergency shelter.
