Biden criticizes Romney in op-ed

DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden said Friday Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney advocates the same policies that caused the U.S. economy to crash.

In an op-ed piece in The Des Moines (Iowa) Register, Biden also accused the former Massachusetts governor of mischaracterizing the Obama administration's economic policies. Biden attacked Romney for contrasting his own "Opportunity Society" with what Romney calls Obama's "Entitlement Society."

"Romney appears satisfied to settle for an economy in which fewer people succeed, while the majority of Americans are left to tread water or fall behind," Biden said.

"His proposal would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

The Iowa caucuses kick off the presidential primary season in two weeks. Polls suggest Romney would be the strongest of the current crop of candidates against Obama, although his campaign has not really caught fire with his own party.

Biden said Romney's prescription for an "Opportunity Society" would actually mean less opportunity for the majority of U.S. residents.
