Alleged Fort Hood bomber gets new lawyer

WACO, Texas, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A Kentucky soldier accused of planning a bomb attack on soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, has been granted a new lawyer.

Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, reported AWOL in July from Fort Campbell, Ky., admitted he planned to assemble two bombs in his hotel room then detonate them at a restaurant in Killeen, Texas, that is popular with soldiers from nearby Fort Hood.

Without giving an exact reason, Abdo requested a new lawyer at a Tuesday hearing, KXXV-TV, Waco, reported. Zachary Boyd will now represent Abdo.

Abdo was charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a fugitive from justice.

If convicted, Abdo could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison and fined up to $250,000 for each count.

An FBI affidavit obtained by KXXV listed the weapons and bomb-making materials allegedly in Abdo's possession, including clocks, spools of wire, gun powder, pressure cookers, a handgun, ammunition and an article, "Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom."
