The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is said to be an ex-boyfriend of the victim and an employee of the hospital. He was arrested at 6:30 am. about half a mile from the scene, UIC police said.

UIC hospital spokesman Mark Rosati said campus police made a traffic stop and recognized the driver as the man police were seeking. The man fled on foot, but was caught soon after by police, who recovered a weapon, Rosati said.

The hospital complex was put on lockdown after the shooting, as SWAT teams searched the area.

Rosati said police conducted a "very thorough, room-by-room, top-to-bottom, roof-to-basement search," going through the complex multiple times.

Medical operations and outpatient surgery returned to normal after the lockdown, Rosati said, adding that there was an increased police presence on the medical campus Friday.
