Three schoolgirls trapped under elevator

OKLAHOMA CITY, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Three students at an Oklahoma City school were rescued with only minor injuries after they became trapped under an elevator, officials said.

The incident occurred Tuesday at Classen School of Advanced Studies, The Oklahoman reported. The girls, a sixth-grader and two seventh-graders, were in a foot-high space in the elevator shaft with the elevator above them.

The girls called 911 and pleaded for rescue. Police released the tape Wednesday.

"Please, lift it off, get it off. Help us," one screams.

School officials say the elevator is kept locked and is only to be used by students with disabilities that prevent them from taking the stairs. One student who is a frequent user has a key, and a teacher holds another one.

Lara O'Leary, a spokeswoman for the Emergency Medical Services Authority, said the girls were in the shaft when the elevator car began to descend. After trying and failing to stop the car, the three lay facedown.

Officials were trying to determine how they got into the shaft.
