Kwame Kilpatrick faces new federal charges

DETROIT, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Prosecutors have added new charges against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, including an allegation he was paid $10,000 in a restaurant men's room.

The new federal racketeering indictment released Wednesday includes a charge Kilpatrick refused city contracts to companies that refused payoffs, The Detroit News reported. Much of the information appears to have come from Derrick Miller, a former Kilpatrick aide who pleaded guilty in September and agreed to cooperate in the investigation.

Miller said he was the one who handed Kilpatrick $10,000 from a restaurant developer. The former mayor is also alleged to have stopped backing a company hoping to open a House of Blues restaurant at Ford Field because officials refused to hire his father.

Lawyer James Thomas told the Detroit Free Press Kilpatrick intends to fight the new charges in court.

"Miller's credibility is going to be tested," Thomas said.
