Kilpatrick book worries Detroit library VP

DETROIT, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- An official with Detroit's library system says he has concerns about an appearance by the co-author of a book by disgraced former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Jonathon Kinloch, vice president of the Library Commission, told the Detroit News he was worried the Oct. 19 event at the library's Friend's Auditorium could be seen as an endorsement of Kilpatrick's version of the events that led to his criminal conviction and ouster from office.

The newspaper said Sunday the appearance by Khary Kimani Turner will highlight the new book "Surrendered: The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick." Kilpatrick has called the work the "truth" about his travails.

"It certainly is the truth from his perspective. But I don't take it to be the truth," said Kinloch. "And I am concerned that the library shouldn't be seen as endorsing the book as the truth."

The library system hasn't commented specifically on Turner's appearance; however, the current policy on speakers is aimed at providing a forum for diverse opinions and is in line with the guidelines of the American Library Association.
