Police: Kidnap 'victim' was 'not truthful'

MONROVIA, Calif., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Police in Southern California say they released a man arrested and charged with trying to kidnap a 6-year-old boy after deciding the child "was not truthful."

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives said the boy reported the attempted kidnapping Saturday, telling investigators he was walking home in Monrovia when a man attempted to grab him, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A two-day manhunt ensued and police made an arrest Sunday night of a man who resembled a composite drawing of the supposed suspect as described by the boy.

However, as investigators further questioned the boy, they found "information did not corroborate the facts as related by the victim and it became evident the child was not truthful with the investigators about the kidnapping," the Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities did not identify the man arrested and released, the Times reported.
