Parents upset by Barbie's new look

NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Some parents in New York City are taking aim at a collector's edition Barbie doll that sports pink hair and tattoos, saying it sets a poor example for kids.

"Barbie's supposed to be a role model for young girls, right? I don't want my daughter looking up to someone like that," said Tom Gurry, 43, of New York's Queens borough.

However, Barbie maker Mattel said the doll, designed by the Los Angeles apparel, toys and cosmetics firm tokidoki, is not being marketed toward children or being sold in kids stores, the New York Daily News reported.

"Barbie has been dressed by more than 70 fashion designers over the years," Mattel said in a statement. "Many of Barbie's most pop-culture couture outfits have been designed for the adult doll collector."

Yet, some parents are upset by Barbie's edgy look.

"I don't think that's an appropriate toy for a young girl," said Vivian Rauda, 51, of New York's Upper East Side. "You don't want your kids to think tattoos are a good idea at such a young age because they last a lifetime."
